I couldn't get closer because it seemed fearful. So it didn't come out, but you can see that it was a nice butterfly.

later: field crescent is my tentative identification. With complex markings, I'm not going to find any pictures that are exactly right. And I saw a picture of a hoffman's checkerspot that looked like a possibility as well. But it doesn't matter all that much, does it?

In particular, the nice, winding row of pale rectangles (blurred into a wiggly stripe in the photo) in the forewing wasn't present in other pictures I looked at.
