california tortoiseshell

california tortoiseshell
migrating/traveling south with the variegated meadowhawks. Less numerous than the VMs, but plentiful enough. Never seen one around before today.

In a reversal of the recent underwing experience, these guys (lots of the various brushfoots are this way) I saw looking bright, where it turns out that if they perch on trees and fold their wings, you see the gray of a tree trunk; that is, you don't see them.
