I haven't seen a little snakey in a long time, but I did see a good-sized garter snake today. And after I started to move on, a few feet away was another striped snake that was pinkish and brownish, from what I can recall. It slid smoothly into the grass before I could take a picture. Since it was right near this one -- and garter snakes are said to be extremely variable in coloration, I'll say it was one as well, but the color was so different...

At least one of the kinds with red scales is supposed to have some red on its head, but this looked like blood to me.
